For interesting bars, shops, and restaurants when one goes to the city of Philadelphia, South Street is a good way to go. Wedged between Jon's Bar & Grille and Steaks on South, you'll find The Legendary Dobbs and all the music and history that comes with it.
Music
Dobbs features all genres of music, although there is a definite focus on rock. The price of shows can differ all based on how well known the band is, the number of bands playing, and all that. There is an upstairs and downstairs stage, so there can be two shows going on with different prices so it never hurts to ask about that. They also feature various jam sessions, usually hosted by local band, that fills in the early days in the week when there are no official concerts.
The Venue
The original Dobbs, opened in 1974 as JC Dobbs, is often described as a classic rock bar and featured many bands in its time that went on to bigger and better things. These bands include Green Day, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Soul Asylum, Rage Against the Machine, and more.(1)
JC Dobbs eventually shut down and attempts were made by the original owners to reopen, but they were not able to get everything in order. A new owner was able to pick up where the old one failed and reopen as the Legendary Dobbs in December 2010. They've been rolling since.(2)
