It's not often that you can find a music establishment that can stick around for many decades in a row, on Main Street in Burlington, Vermont, though, you will find Nectars which has been rocking since 1975.
Music
Nectars boasts that they feature everything from reggae to rock and that they are THE place (their capitalization, not mine) for live music in downtown Burlington. I would not disagree, although I might argue they could widen their range to all of Burlington, but that's just semantics; lets stick to the music.
Whether its Reggae Night, Metal Mondays, a local band, or touring band, one look at the calendar confirms that they offer all types of music here. They even have an official motto: "Fresh music served daily."
The Venue
Nectars is located in an older building in downtown Burlington. Nectars' website tells us that it was originally a saving and loan building, so its suffices to say that was not necessary the exciting period in the building's history. It was purchased and turned into a two story restaurant and lounge called Hi-Hat. In 1975 it was purchased by Nector Rorris, and thus Nectar's was born. Probably the most famous band to start there was Phish, formed at the University of Vermont in 1983. They played their first gig at Nectars, followed by a series of monthly three night stands. Phish's album A Picture of Nectar is dedicated to Nector Rorris.(1)
These days, you'll find the Nectars still delivering; they have two room, one is the more bar oriented area with tables and pool. On the opposite side is the room, complete with stage and bar in the back. The bar doesn't do bad for itself, carrying a good selection of beers, many of them local Vermont beers, and some cheap selection for those trying to save a dollar.
